Anonymity and Identity Protection Policy;
World Poverty and Human Rights Online Anonymity and Security Policy
The directors and staff of wphr.org consider protecting the identitites of authors and other sources of information from persecution to be of the greatest importance. In a world where corrupt regimes routinely use torture, dissapearance, and even mass murder to silence legitimate dissent, our commitment to protecting those who grant us the privilege of sharing their stories with the world entire must take precedence above all else, including publication itself. To this end, the following measures are implemented on an ongoing basis:
- Any author requesting anonymity shall be granted such, and all reasonable and available measures to protect said anonymity will be taken at all times by all members of wphr.org.
- This protection extends further to people and places mentioned in articles, and no names or identifying information will be published unless permission is expressly granted by the subject(s) and reasonable assurances of their continued safety are obtained.
- Authors in locations where internet activity may be monitored are highly encouraged to use the World Poverty and Human Rights Online Secure access site located at https://secure.wphr.org.
- Any author who requests it will be granted a unique PGP public key by wphr.org for the purpose of encrypting work to be submitted to wphr.org securely. Secure shell or similar access will be accommodated as is reasonably able.
- No material will be published anonymously or otherwise if WPHR staff or members have reason to believe it will bring about immediate physical harm to the author or his or her subjects.
- In extreme cases where an author or their subject is determined to be at very high risk of reprisal, a unique and non-identifying email address may be reqested by the author for the purpose of submitting material via the above mentioned PGP mechanism and granted absent just cause to do otherwise. Alternately, Encrypted Secure Shell access to a secured server for the same purpose may granted upon request of the author and approval of WPHR staff.
- Server access log files are to be kept in a secure location on the filesystem with access controls in place such that only WPHR staff with top level access can view them. Logs will be rotated and deleted on a regular basis.
The above measures are not intended to be comprehensive. It is the duty of all WPHR staff to undertake any and all reasonable measures including general security best practices to protect the safety and security of our contributors and their subjects. WPHR also reserves the right to independently verify facts in submitted stories and to make a final determination of suitability for publication on WPHR.org.
